Harry Budd

Biography

As you can see, there is very little information known about Harry Budd, so any information or pictures of Harry is needed to fill in the blanks.  If you have anything to contribute, any factual racing result or story, please contact me, it would be greatly appreciated.

It is known that Harry was also the Official Starter for the NSW Speedcar Association at both Parramatta (Cumberland Oval – now Parramatta Football Stadium) and Windsor Speedway. His style was to stand approx. five yards in front of the starting line (beside the track not from an overhead starters box as used today). If he was happy, he would hold both arms in the air, run backwards with flag in one hand, and on reaching the start line wave the flag frantically, and then head for the infield. If he wasn’t happy with the lineup, he would cross his arms at his waist, scissor fashion, indicating no start. Some drivers were not adverse to putting a wheel up on the grass occupied by Harry!

There were 3 Jolus car built without any spare chassis or kits. The first car built, and was unique in having fixed length driveshafts as part of its rear suspension. The second car to race had top link rear suspension. Harry, purportedly purchased the remains of a dismantled Jolus plus a used engine, gearbox, wheels and suspension to build his rear-engined sports car called the Stirling.

* Many thought BMC would also enter a works team, to be headed by Evan Green, and there was speculation that the General would enter their new S4 EH Holden – but instead they kept that for later in the year, for the running of the 1964 Armstrong 500. As it was however, the only S4 to be entered in the race was by privateer Harry Budd.

I spent a lot of my youth around Kingsford. Did Harry work at Kingsford? Was he an auto electrician? If that’s the case, maybe I could enquire at the autolec and other garages in the area for info… I live in a neighbouring suburb now.

Thomas thank you. Harry was a car mechanic. Back in the early 1950’s, with a business partner and friend, they owned a car yard – or so I’m told. Harry and the family did live in Kingsford before moving up to the Central Coast in the mid 1950’s. Any information that you find out I would love it. Thank you so much Thomas.

Thank you for the offer. I know Harry Snr’s personal details, as I am his daughter-in-law as I was married to his second son, Jim. What I am trying to piece together is Harry’s car racing factual history.
